Now what? A Facebook Collaboration (PDF inside)

As a GALLUP™ Certified Strengths Coach, I make money through helping others identify their talents, and build those talents into undeniable strengths.  I’m often hired to lead workshops, give presentations, or serve the audience as their keynote speaker for conferences and offsite retreats. The ability to make a living by simply doing something that you love is often dubbed the Pinnacle of Success. And…I would have to agree

Most of the time I am extremely confident in my ability as a coach. Actually, I’m not a huge fan of the term “coach,” but I think that I addressed those thoughts in a previous blog post, so I won’t perch myself back on top of that soap box.

Anyway, I’ve worked with small teams, large teams, and rooms of people that have never met before my presentation. They come to my events from varied backgrounds, industries, and serve the world as a cornucopia of talent. At the end of my presentations, and I say “end,” but I understand that the journey towards a strengths-based life, both personally and professionally, never really comes to a halt.

Or does it?

“I know my strengths, I know the strengths of my team, but now what; where do we go from here?”

I hear that question just about as often as I hear, “What’s WOO?!” It rears its head following every strengths engagement I am a part of. GALLUP™ has defined a three step approach they refer to as NAMING, CLAIMING AND AIMING. For those of you that are familiar with this trifecta of talent positioning, I’ll spare you the long explanation, and simply jot down the CliffsNotes.

NAMING – Being able to identify your talents, understand their meaning, and commit them to memory for easy reference.

CLAIMING – Having the ability to take ownership of your talents. “YES! These are mine, and I will commit to the development of these themes in an effort to kick-butt and take names!”

AIMING – This is the application part of the triple play! This is where the rubber meets the road, and you begin identifying ways to apply your talents. And not just your own, this step is where the secret sauce flexes its muscle and wields an unstoppable power associated with team development. (I know…super dramatic, but that’s how I roll)

The AIMING is also (and I don’t want to ruffle any feathers so this is just my opinion) where most people get tangled up deep in the weeds of the 34 talent themes, and often throw in the towel on their strengths journey.

Now…for some personal transparency. I DON’T HAVE ALL OF THE ANSWERS. I don’t, and as a coach, I sometimes feel like I should.

“I know my strengths, I know the strengths of my team, but now what; where do we go from here?”

It’s not that I don’t have a response, but the response I have often involves MORE WORK. That’s work from both myself filling the roll as a coach, and more work for the client as someone that as a desire to inject strengths into their company’s culture. And work takes time! There’s not a rapid action one can take that will prove effective in 24 hours or less. If strengths-based development did work that fast, I’d be spending money right now on the production of a late night infomercial.

Squirrel!

So in an effort to garner some more insights, and fill up my own toolbox of responses to that famous question, I reached out to the awesome folks that engage on social media. There are several Facebook groups where the conversation is solely focused on everything StrengthsFinder.

It didn’t take long for the responses to start pouring in. Everyone was super helpful, and was quick to drop their genius in that easily recognized Facebook comment box.
